Rubbish removal with a smile

What comes to your mind when you think “Rubbish Removal?” I bet you think of a big pile of junk on the nature strip or a skip bin full to the top with scattered bits and pieces that just won’t fit. Rubbish removal tends to be a tipping point job. You’ve either got too much stuff in the way, or it’s starting to pile up and messing with your calm feelings. It can also be part of the end of an era.

Recently, we received a call from an elderly couple on the Central Coast who were relocating and downsizing to be closer to their adult children. While the initial job was touted as rubbish removal, it became a journey of discovery and connection.

A lifetime of memories

He’s 90, and she’s 92. In the stoic traditions of generations past, Jean was determined to do the packing herself. After some to-and-fro and figuring out that the job was much bigger than anticipated, Jean decided to call Matt from Rovs to help with the rubbish removal.

“There were some big items and some glass that couldn’t go in the council bin", says Jean “I needed a bit of help and I was so glad I found Matt. A real gentleman, always courteous and professional”

As many jobs can do, this one went from one visit to multiple visits over several months as Matt uncovered a lifetime’s worth of belongings that required careful sorting into what was treasure and what was trash.

Communication and care are everything

Over the project, Jean and her husband Ron needed some time out. Ron had a mishap and ended up in the hospital for a time, and Jean had a few bad days mixed with good ones. The trick during this time was open communication. Jean, bless her, was a master texter. She could punch out a text quicker than most, and she was completely comfortable letting us know when she was on point and when she was not feeling well. This made Matt’s job so much more efficient. He could plan his schedule around their health to maximise his time in their home.

During a down period, Matt communicated directly with the couple’s daughter. While she lived more than six hours away, Kathy became the primary contact, and Matt could discuss questions with her. While sorting through the belongings, he found several pieces of the couple’s legacy, war medals, and photos he couldn’t bring himself to toss. Thankfully, Kathy was the font of knowledge on what to keep and what to let go of, with many of these sentimental items saved for future generations.

Books and music

Books and music filled the lives of our clients. In fact, the literary collection was more like a library than a domestic repository. Matt saw that books were like family to Jean, with some editions dating back over 75 years. Matt was careful in handling these precious gems, and Jean was generous in sharing, gifting several books to the Rovs’ family to keep the spirit of reading and the passion of great storytelling alive and well.

While the extensive collection of books was a task, it didn’t come close to removing and rehoming the two grand pianos that were Ron’s pride and joy. Ron was an avid and talented pianist who didn’t want his pianos to end up in a landfill.

Matt put his creative problem-solving brain into gear, found a way to get the pianos out of the house in one piece, and transported them to a new home for a renewed life, much to Ron’s delight.

From the client

Jean and Ron are nicely settled into their new digs at the aged care facility, which has a piano and serves up their favourite pudding. Ron even sneaks a couple of cheeky beers in when he can.

“I had the extreme good fortune to engage Matt during a challenging period. Once my parents had sold the home, we were under significant time pressure to ensure the house was ready for the new owners to take possession. Fortunately, Matt agreed to provide his services to complete the enormous task of packing and emptying the house.

In terms of reliability, professionalism, and results, Matt was exceptional. He turned up when he said he would, and his communications were regular and professional. I was never left wondering. In addition, Matt’s kindness, understanding, and respectfulness regarding my parents’ circumstances were outstanding.

I recommend engaging Matt for complex work that requires a well-executed completion strategy within tight deadlines. If you want to work with someone who can complete the work whilst displaying all the traits of a highly sound human being, call Matt.

I give Matt 6 stars out of 5”.

Practical Tips

Start small and prioritise

Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to tackle everything at once. Begin with one room, cupboard, or category (like books or clothing). Small wins keep the momentum going.

Separate treasure from trash

Have clear piles for keeping, donating, recycling, and discarding. This will help you make quick decisions and ensure that sentimental or valuable items aren’t accidentally thrown away.

Use professional help for heavy or bulky items

Large items like furniture, pianos, or glass can be unsafe to move alone. Engage professionals like Rovs with the equipment, skill, and care to handle them properly.

Communicate clearly with everyone involved

If family members are involved in the process, keep them in the loop. Texts, photos, or quick calls can prevent disagreements later and ensure the preservation of treasured items.

Think beyond disposal

Not everything has to go to a landfill. Explore donation, rehoming, or recycling options. Giving items a second life—like Ron’s pianos—can bring peace of mind and reduce waste.
