Restoring access and a hillside renovation - The background

We love a challenge, and our clients, David and Margaret, presented an opportunity to rejuvenate a neglected portion of their magical 4.5-acre property in Terrigal on the NSW Central Coast.

The dynamic duo had already invested considerable resources and time on one side of their property. They had constructed sandstone block retaining walls and beautified the gardens and surrounding terrain with clever plantings and well-maintained walking paths.

The challenge was on the opposite side, where a steep slope, aging trees, and dense foliage made the area difficult to work in. David and Margaret had let it go while they directed their efforts to the more scenic part of the estate. The area is large and neglected, resulting in wild vegetation overgrowth, and the hillside had become unstable and inaccessible. The area lacked functionality, was dangerous, and was not fulfilling its potential as a statement piece for the property.

Additionally, Margaret had been experiencing health and mobility issues and was reliant on a mobility scooter. David and Margaret had a clear goal. Reclaim the area and transform it into a safe beautiful space she could access using their 4×4 buggy.

“A well-executed excavation project can transform a bland or overgrown backyard into a visually stunning outdoor space.”

the challenge of the renovation

The challenge

The location and slope presented several challenges. Also, at Rov’s, we are committed to sustainability and, wherever possible, prefer to repurpose materials or use natural alternatives rather than artificial materials.

“I’m a bit of a conservationist and I was really pleased when Matt started talking about repurposing and using recycled products instead of the easy option like steel and concrete,” Says David

The terrain was unstable and eroding, making accessibility difficult. Years of overgrowth had turned the site into a thicket of dense vegetation, making “seeing” the ground and maneuvering safely cumbersome.

Considering that Margaret required safe, level, and stable ground to use her mobility aids, ensuring the site was fit for purpose, and could be executed within budget needed careful planning, repurposing, and efficient scheduling.

the solution

The Solution

David and Matt from Rov’s collaborated on a phased master plan that fitted into David and Margaret’s timeline. The master plan enabled Matt and the team to work with natural and recycled materials that added to the existing environment and preserved the site’s natural look and feel. The team also redesigned a composting site that could absorb organic waste from the entire property.

Matt’s priority was establishing stable tracks for the tractor and ride-on mower to reach key areas of the site safely and quickly. He created extensive networks of paths intertwining over 1.5 km throughout the hillside. The team used cut-and-fill excavation methods and recycled aggregate for stability and durability.

Matt introduced a GEOWEB system for the steepest and highest-traffic sections. A grid system and cellular structure made from 100% recycled PET bottles, the product is combined with recycled GEO Fabric and secured in place. It offers several key advantages:

  • Long-term slope stabilisation.
  • The product provides a high degree of permeability, which allows water to flow naturally and helps prevent erosion.
  • Its durability enables mid-sized machinery, such as small tractors, 4×4 buggies, and ride-on mowers, to use the track safely.

The overgrown vegetation was removed, and new trees and plants were transplanted to promote rain absorption and create visual lines of sight. David, an avid gardener, and his regular gardener, Ned, planned these plantings carefully.

Matt and the Rov’s team used excavators, posi-track loaders, compactors, and a fair amount of old-fashioned manual labour to shape the land and ensure it was safe, stable, future-proofed, and fit for purpose.

This is the landscape outcome

The outcome

We are pleased that the project ticked the practical boxes and pulled on the emotional heartstrings. For the first time in a while, Margaret can safely visit this part of the property using the 4X4 buggy.

The once neglected part of the garden is now a terraced sanctuary that moulds into its surroundings.

The project was completed in under 25 days, avoiding the cost blowouts that traditional landscaping often incurs.

Its functionality is matched by its beauty, and the extensive repurposing of materials and use of ecological landscaping practices are perfectly balanced and aligned with Rov’s philosophy of sustainability wherever possible.

David and Margaret’s hillside oasis is now a treasured part of their property and will be enjoyed for many years.

“Margaret is overjoyed with the new look of the garden. It is her favourite place to spend time,”Says David

FAQs

Yes. We serve homeowners across the NSW Central Coast, the Hunter Valley region, and the Blue Mountains. Our team is familiar with the terrain in these areas, from coastal properties to rural acreage and mountain slopes, and we have the equipment and expertise to handle a wide range of residential excavation and landscaping projects in all of these locations. We’re a locally based business, so we understand the specific challenges and benefits of working in these regions, and we’re ready to help you improve your property no matter which of these areas you call home.

Absolutely. We specialise in tackling steep or tricky slopes that many homeowners find unsafe or inaccessible. Our team can stabilise an eroding hillside and turn it into a safe, functional part of your yard. We use proven earthmoving techniques to reshape the slope gently, often employing cut-and-fill methods to create stable, level terraces or pathways.

Yes, we can rejuvenate overgrown or neglected sections of your property. Our team will first carefully clear out dense vegetation, weeds, and unsafe dead trees to open up the area. We handle the clearing to preserve what you want to keep, for instance, healthy mature trees or plants can sometimes be saved or even transplanted elsewhere on your property. Once the excessive growth is removed and we can see the land’s contours, we will re-grade and shape the terrain to suit your goals for example, creating a terraced garden, usable flat spots, or gently sloped paths.

Definitely, a big part of our excavation and landscaping work is ensuring you can access all areas of your property safely, even if you use small vehicles or mobility aids. We can design and build stable pathways or tracks wide enough for a 4×4 buggy, ride-on lawnmower, or mobility scooter. We make paths have a firm, even surface and proper traction. We might use the geocell reinforcement on very steep sections or install edging to keep the track solid under the wheels.

Sustainability is one of our core values, and we always look for eco-friendly solutions. Rather than taking the “easy” route of using all-new, artificial materials, we strive to repurpose existing materials and choose natural or recycled options whenever possible.

We manage excavation and landscaping waste responsibly. Green waste, like brush, branches, tree limbs, and grass, can often be recycled or reused. If you’re open to it, we can create or improve a composting area on your property so that much of the cleared organic material turns into nutrient-rich compost for your gardens. If on-site composting isn’t suitable for you, no problem: we will haul away the green waste and ensure it’s disposed of or recycled correctly. As for excess soil or rubble from excavation, we use it elsewhere on your property to level low spots or build up terraces. Any material that can’t be reused will be transported off-site and disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. We also make sure to leave your property clean after the project; you won’t be left with piles of debris.

Yes, we’re very mindful of budgets and can tailor a project to fit your financial plan, including breaking it into stages if needed. The first step is working with you to develop a master plan for your property’s transformation. We’ll prioritise the tasks and can spread them out in phases so that each stage delivers a useful result and stays within a set budget portion. Careful scheduling and planning mean we won’t waste time or resources.

The timeline can vary a lot depending on the scope and complexity of the work, but we will give you a clear estimate after evaluating your project. Many residential projects only take a few days to a few weeks. We understand that having work done on your property can be disruptive, so we make it a priority to work efficiently and respectfully. We schedule the job to minimise impact on your daily life, if there are preferred times or days, we’ll do our best to accommodate them.

We have a fleet of modern earthmoving equipment of various sizes, and we choose the right tools for each job. Common machinery we might use includes excavators, posi-track loaders, and compactors/rollers. We also aren’t afraid of old-fashioned manual labour with shovels and wheelbarrows in spots where heavy machinery can’t reach.

Yes, we aim to make the new work look like it belongs on your property. We take care to match the style and feel of your existing landscape. This means we often use natural materials and earthy aggregates so the colours and textures blend with the surroundings. We also consider the layout of your current garden, and we will design the new features to complement that.

Getting started is simple. You can contact us by phone or through our website to discuss your project. We’ll usually arrange a time to visit your property for a consultation, where we listen to your ideas and goals and assess the site conditions. After this on-site visit, we’ll provide a clear plan and a free quote for the work discussed. There’s no obligation; we want to ensure you’re comfortable with the plan, timeline, and cost. Once you’re ready to proceed, we will schedule the work for times that suit you.

Practical Tips

Start with expert advice.

Professional input at the start will help identify challenges like poor drainage, soil instability or access issues. A clear plan saves time, money and ensures your project meets local standards.

Clear vegetation methodically.

Overgrown areas are best tackled in manageable sections. Use the right equipment or hire clearing specialists to remove dense growth and uncover usable ground safely.

Prepare the ground for proper drainage.

Shaping the land to guide water away from buildings and paths prevents erosion and water damage. Drainage features like swales or gravel trenches are essential on sloped blocks.

Use terraces and retaining walls wisely.

Terraces create flat, usable spaces for steep land while retaining walls hold soil in place and add structure. Choose materials that suit your style and get them professionally installed.

Plan for safe, comfortable movement.

Paths and access points should be easy to navigate with solid, non-slip materials and gentle gradients. Consider lighting, steps, and handrails to ensure safe use for everyone.
