The property was situated on a large sloping block with challenging access, making conventional machinery unsuitable for most of the work. Over many years, competing vegetation had spread throughout the landscape, creating dense overgrowth that concealed retaining walls, pathways and garden features. More importantly, the unchecked plant growth was beginning to pose a risk to retaining walls and surrounding structures as root systems expanded and invasive plants continued to establish themselves.

Assessing the challenges
Large sloping blocks are not unusual in the neck of the woods. The undulating and steep terrain is a reason many gardens get out of control. They can be very tricky to manage. Before any restoration work can take place, we need to study the ground, identify access points, and carefully plan any machinery intervention. Steep terrain creates additional safety considerations for workers and the surrounding property.
In this case, the majority of the site was inaccessible to machinery. Every stage of clearing, pruning and vegetation removal would need to be completed manually. While this increases the labour involved, it also allows for far greater penetration, reducing the risk of damaging existing landscaping and retaining walls.
At the upper section of the property, limited excavation was required to remove vegetation and reshape areas that had become overgrown. Elsewhere across the block, the project relied almost entirely on skilled manual labour.
Removing years of overgrowth
Matt and the team initially focused on removing the dense vegetation that had taken over the property. Thick weeds, invasive plants and uncontrolled growth had created competition for space, sunlight and nutrients, leaving little opportunity for desirable plants to take hold.
The team cut back established vegetation while removing unwanted plants throughout the garden. This process required significant manual effort, with material being carried from areas where machinery could not reach. As the overgrowth disappeared, important landscape features began to re-emerge. Retaining walls became fully visible, access around the property improved, and the garden’s overall structure could be appreciated.

Restoring order through careful manual work
One of the defining features of this project was the amount of manual work involved. Rather than relying on heavy equipment, much of the garden was restored using hand tools and manual labour. Weeding was undertaken across the entire property to remove established weed populations and prevent further competition. We mapped vegetation removal to improve airflow, increase natural light, expose garden features and create a cleaner, manageable landscape. Working by hand also allowed the team to navigate the terrain safely while protecting existing structures.
Long-term weed control
A complete garden overhaul should improve the appearance today and make future maintenance easier. Once the unwanted vegetation had been removed and the site cleared, Matt and the team installed weed matting across key garden areas. The weed matting is a great product that provides an effective barrier, helping suppress future weed growth while allowing moisture to penetrate the soil. Fresh mulch was spread throughout the garden. Quality mulch is a must for garden beds and assists with moisture retention, helps regulate soil temperature and further reduces weed germination. These measures greatly reduce ongoing maintenance and support healthier garden beds.
Despite the property’s challenges, the entire garden overhaul was completed over four days. Manual labour, careful excavation, vegetation management and weed suppression completely changed the property’s appearance. Areas that were inaccessible became usable again, while retaining walls and structural elements were no longer hidden beneath uncontrolled growth. The garden has been reset with a sound foundation for ongoing maintenance, allowing the homeowners to enjoy a safer and far more manageable outdoor space.
